A Baibaoqian Lacquered Box with Spring Blossom Pattern
Imitating the Qing Dynasty style, this covered court box with a wooden body was painted in traditional red lacquer. The surface of the box was incised and gilt in the qiangjin technique to outline the motif of foliate scrolls in a decorative style. The cover is decorated with a pattern inlaid with baibaoqian technique using soapstones, Baarin Mongolian pyrophyllite, clam shells, mother of pearl and other natural precious materials, carved into layered motifs of peach tree, canary, pomegranates, flowers, mountain rocks, etc. The peach tree is the tree of longevity in Chinese folklore, as the proverb says, "The pomegranate blesses posterity with a hundred children, the peach offers a thousand years of longevity". This box and cover bear the symbols of endless happiness, longevity and wealth.
