MUSEA: A Book of Modern Muses


Inspired by Adrian Cheng’s cultural-retail destination, K11 MUSEA, the art-and-design book produced by Condé Nast blends cutting-edge designs with curated arts and culture. Each chapter explores modern-day muses through works by Jefferson Hack, James Corner, Jane Goodall and Hans Ulrich Obrist among many others.


Exploring inspiration in all its forms, the book captures moments which drive today’s creatives, artisans and thinkers, whilst featuring original artwork, photography and original essays from around the globe. Inspired by Adrian Cheng’s innovative cultural-retail environment, K11 MUSEA, the art-and-design book produced by Condé Nast blends cutting-edge designs with celebrations of curated arts and culture.

The beautifully curated chapters, each an exhibition in themselves, reflect the K11 MUSEA concept, bringing ancient ideas of muses to life for a new generation. Powerful visuals include Andy Thomas’s digital artwork which are inspired by the soundscape of the harbour at Victoria Dockside; the fantastical, two-storey-high creations by botanical sculptor Makoto Azuma, and a personal portfolio of Hong Kong street style by photographer by Issac Lam.

Captivating essays include a conversation with curator Hans Ulrich Obrist and insightful writings by historian Peter Frankopan, architect Forth Bagley, Vogue contributing editor Harriet Quick and award-winning poet Sarah Howe.

Redefining the idea of a global cultural destination, K11 MUSEA provides a platform for artistic experimentation and creative ideation, fostering a space that is breaking down the boundaries between contemporary art and retail. Echoing this, the book aims to highlight K11 Group’s ongoing commitment to and passion for the propagation of Hong Kong’s art and cultural scene, with attention drawn to the rotating collection of public art and site-specific art that forms one of the city’s largest showcases of public art.

K11 MUSEA is the new cultural-retail destination on Victoria Dockside, Hong Kong, and is designed to enrich the new consumer’s daily life through the power of creativity, culture and innovation. It is the latest innovative development by K11 Group, a concept brand founded by entrepreneur Adrian Cheng in 2008. Opened in August 2019, K11 MUSEA ushers in a new era of cultural retail which speaks to the growing consumer demand for naturally immersive experiences of art, culture and commerce.

Inspired by ‘A Muse by the Sea’, the architecture of K11 MUSEA was led by Kohn Pedersen Fox architecture practice, James Corner Field Operations, and in collaboration with over 100 creatives including Rotterdam-based OMA, Hong Kong-based architecture studio LAAB. It is Adrian Cheng’s vision to reinvigorate this iconic district with 100 creative powers including over 40 artists, to make K11 MUSEA the silicon valley of culture that will inspire global millennials, and facilitate a broader discussion on the interconnectedness of creativity, culture and innovation.
