Singgih Kartono graduated from Indonesia’s Bandung Institute of Technology with a degree in Product Design. He then returned to his village of Kandangan to establish Piranti Works, and teach carpentry skills following new craft principles. Singgih also set up a tree nursery where trees are planted to replace those used in production and are distributed to villagers to re-plant on their own land.
Singgih’s use of materials and his production methods help tackle socio-economic and ecological problems of his village. His urge to improve Kandangan has become the source of his energy and passion. Singgih is also the recipient of Japan’s prestigious ‘Good Design’award.
