Designer's Profile
Born in Milan in 1918, Achille Castiglioni has been involved since 1940 in the experimentation on industrial products, together with his brothers architects Livio (1911-1979) and Pier Giacomo (1913-1968). With the latter, after achieving his degree in architecture in 1944, he started a design activity entirely dedicated to the research on forms, techniques and “new” materials, having the objective of implementing an “integral” designing process.

A founder-member of the Association for the Industrial Design, he has been a protagonist of several editions of the Triennal of Milan, up to the “New Triennal” of 1979, where he was among the twelve Italian designers of the “Collection of Design”.

Especially relevant has been the role played by Castiglioni in the creation of some of the most brilliant objects of the modern design, together with countless stagings, from those created for the Triennal itself to the display of the Zanotta Collection at the Forum Design of Linz in 1980.

His production is documented by many essays on design, by the proceedings of the prize “Golden Compasses” (many times awarded to him) as well as by the collections of the most important museums of design. In 1980, the archive of his and his brother Pier Giacomo's architectural practice has been acquired by the Study Center and Communication Archive of the University of Parma.

In 1984, at the Museum fur Angewandte Kunst of Vienna opened his travelling personal exhibition, that afterwards has been held at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste of Berlin, the Triennal of Milan, the Kunstgewerbe Museum of Zurich, the Gemeentemuseum of the Hague, the Circulo des Bellas Artes of Madrid, the Centre Georges Pompidou (Beaubourg) of Paris. In 1986, the Rohsska Konstslöjdmuseet of Göteborg held an exhibition of the objects designed by him for Zanotta and Flos.

Besides his designing and critic activity (performed in the fifties on the journal "Stile Industria"), there is also his teaching practice: a university teacher from 1969, since 1981 he has been the regular professor of Industrial Design and Furnishing at the Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic of Milan.
