METAPHYS consists of a number of partner companies which share the METAPHYS’s brand concept. Chiaki Murata, the brand’s producer, designs each item based on the company’s core competence. The name “METAPHYS” derives from metaphysics, “a discipline that explores the basic principle of all existences.” Do we really need the things that we think we need every day? Have we not made the wrong use of things something we now take for granted? We are asked to take the approach of discerning the significance of the existence of things in a consumer culture of excessive production. Metaphys is a brand created by the collaboration of enterprises and individuals that share this idea. It is a design business that guides the “nature of things,” the “marking of things” and the “flow of things” to their roots.
